KC23's Spring Offensive Strategy Guide - Airfields
Fortunately airfields are
one of the least complicated of all the missions. Usually it only takes
a couple of flights of medium bombers to shut each one of them down. The
trick to airfields is getting all your fighters and bombers back home
in one piece.
When you first start the Spring Offensive campaign you have two high
MiG activity airfields on the West Coast (Kimpo, Seoul) and one Centrally
located (Chuncheon) . I like to start by setting up two flights of medium
bomber attacks for each West Coast airfield. They are both very close
together so one large BARCAP can effectively protect both groups of bombers
from the hordes of MiGs that will be waiting.
Derek Bond came up with some excellent
advice on protecting these vital assets. Derek likes to use F80s as
close escort and send all the F86s on BARCAP about five minutes out
in front of the bombers. Then he uses any F86s left as escort for BARCAP.
Making the F86s escort F86s keeps large numbers of F86s together. The
result being, 16 F80s flying close escort and an additional 32 F86s
in close proximity of both bomber groups. Before you go away laughing
at these numbers (48 fighters) consider this.
The Reds don't just throw a MiG or
two at you they often send over 32 after you. You can be in a group
of 16 F86s and get completely overwhelmed by numbers. On the other
hand if you go in with 48 you can expect to have about a 10 to one
kill ratio. It may feel almost like cheating in the first few days
of the Spring Offensive, but after a month or so when you still have
some F86s to throw at the enemy you'll be glad you were so aggressive
early on. Replacement of F86s is slow, so guard them jealously.
Once you taken out the high MiG activity
airfields closest to the front you don't have to be quite so paranoid,
but in the first few missions in the Spring Offensive be prepared for
lots of company. These missions are often spectacular looking with
several dozens of aircraft streaking across the sky all seemingly going
in different directions.
The airfields can be repaired ,so it is a good idea to keep checking
to see how much has been repaired.
In the "Dossier" window
of the airfield in question, check under damage. If it is nearly completely
repaired it is time to send a medium bomber strike at it. It is much
better to hit an airfield just before it is completely repaired. This
way you won't have to deal with a squad of MiGs waiting for you when
you send another couple of medium bomber flights back to knock it out
again.
